The musical side of the opera was splendid. Tabachnik did manage to get some better than usual playing from the COC Orchestra and maintained an excellent balance between pit and stage. The main ingredients were an ability to achieve dramatic tension in his favourite slow sections and an interest in orchestra tone colour and dynamics. (The Mail-1985)
